The Public Legal Education program is based on the philosophy that knowledge leads to empowerment. 

 The more you know about your rights and obligations in the workplace, the better you will be able to identify any violations of your rights.

The WRC believes that knowledge leads to the power to advocate for yourself, and understand your ability to do so.

Since 2007, the WRC has facilitated over 1160 workshops for more than 16,000 individuals (most of them from vulnerable populations). 

In 2022, we offered 89 Public Legal Education workshops to 1388 participants, 62% of whom were newcomers to Canada.

The WRC takes a flexible approach to workshop delivery, and strives to present complex information in plain language. 

 The majority of our workshop participants over the past few years have consisted of new Canadians and young workers.

Workshops typically last between 2-3 hours.

Each workshop we facilitate is tailored to meet the specific interests and learning objectives of learners.

• Alberta Employment Standards
• Changes to Alberta Employment Standards
• Employment Insurance (types of benefits and eligibility requirements, etc.)

We also provide basic introductions to:

• Alberta Human Rights Act ( as it relates to employment)
• Workers' Compensation in Alberta
• Occupational Health and Safety

In 2023, 99% of our workshop participants reported that the PLE Program increased their knowledge of their employment-related rights and benefits to which they are entitled, as well as their capacity to access those rights and benefits.
