Statement from the Workers’ Resource Centre on transitioning AISH recipients to ADAP
The Workers’ Resource Centre is aware that many disabled Albertans have been receiving letters informing them that they will be transitioned from AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped) to the new Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP). We recognize that these letters are arriving at a moment already marked by uncertainty, and that many recipients may have questions about what it means for them and what their next steps should be.
Over the years, the Workers’ Resource Centre has helped hundreds of Albertans with disabilities access AISH supports. This transition represents a significant change for many of the people our organization has long served and we are committed to following this process closely.
Here is what Albertans should know at this time:
- Some people have received a letter indicating they will remain on AISH automatically and no action is required. There will be no change to their benefits.
- For Albertans who have received a letter indicating they will be transitioned from AISH to ADAP, the transition is automatic and they will continue receiving the same benefits they were receiving under AISH until December 31, 2027.
- Albertans with a severe disability that permanently prevents them from working who received a letter indicating that they will be transitioned to ADAP may have the option to apply to return to AISH — an application process is expected to be available in July.
The Workers’ Resource Centre will provide an update once the new application is available and we have had the opportunity to review it. We remain committed to disabled Albertans and will share more information as it becomes available.
About the Workers’ Resource Centre
The Workers’ Resource Centre helps workers understand their rights, access their benefits, and file complaints with government agencies that regulate employment rules in Alberta. We provide legal information and advocacy support to help workers navigate government programs and processes related to job loss, lost wages, workplace discrimination, injury, illness and disability. We also provide assistance to connect workers to programs that help ensure their basic needs are met.
